| The Singapore Sports Awards were introduced by the
National Olympic Council in 1967 to recognize the achievements of
our sportsmen and sportswomen locally, regionally and international.
Then-President of the SNOC, Mr. Othman Wok wanted to reward and
encourage Singaporean athletes with much-needed support. During the
1960s, Singapore’s principal energies were directed towards
academics. However, Mr. Othman understood that a strong nation would
have to include physically strong and healthy people. The Awards
program was later expanded to include Sportsboy and Sportsgirl and
Meritorious Awards for Junior athletes. Some of Singapore’s rising
stars have received these awards and gone on to achieve
international glory for Singapore. |
