The Team Singapore contingent for the 1st Asian Youth Games came together on 31 October 2009 to honour the medalists for their outstanding performances at the Games Games. The sponsor for the scholarships are NTUC FairPrice Foundation, a registered charity set up by NTUC FairPrice in March 2008 with a mission to provide “A Better Life for the Community” and vision to be a world-class retailer with a heart, sponsored a total of $108,250 to the sports scholarships for the medalists.
The NTUC FairPrice Foundation Sports Scholarship for Athletes – Asian Youth
Games 2009 is modeled differently from the Multi-Million Award Programme (MAP) for the four Major Games – Olympic Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Southeast Asia Games, in that the awardees receive no cash. Instead the awardee receives a sports scholarship with a cash value with which they can use to offset the purchase of
training equipment, vitamins and supplements, tickets to training camps, hiring of coaches
etc. It will start on the day of the Ceremony till the athlete has claimed the full amount of the
scholarship; and upon submission of the proper documentation. These scholarships will
help to defray the cost of the training as they pursue greater heights in their sporting careers
following the Asian Youth Games 2009.
Receiving the top honours at the ceremony was Ms Quah Ting Wen, receiving $16,250. Ting Wen was also named the Female Athlete of the Games. Coming in next is bowler Miss New Hui Fen, who received a total of $16,000. A total of 29 athletes, out of the 90 athletes who participated, won medals and was rewarded with the sports scholarship from NTUC FairPrice Foundation.
Guest-of-Honour Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Defence and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC), together with Mr Ng Ser Miang, Chairman of NTUC FairPrice Foundation and Lee Wung Yew, Chef De Mission of the Games presented the scholarships.
